Curriculum

The Early Year Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework sets the UK standards for learning, development and care for children from birth to five. The curriculum guides the work of all practitioners and is grouped into four distinct but complementary themes:

  • A Unique Child
  • Positive Relationships
  • Enabling Environments
  • Learning and Development

A Unique Child recognises that every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured. The commitments are focused around development, inclusion, safety and health and well-being.

  • I will focus on how children develop. I will recognise that they are all different but should be treated equally. Positive relationships and good communication are vital. Children will learn about risks and safety, how to make good choices and how to stick to boundaries. I will provide opportunity for each child to reach their potential. I will ensure their physical and emotional needs are met during their time with me.

Positive Relationships describes how children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person. The commitments are focused around respect, partnership with parents, supporting learning and the role of the key person.

  • I will help children learn to manage their feelings and to build up relationships. I will respect all families and aim to develop a positive relationship with parents. I will build up a close relationship with the children and will support them in their learning.

Enabling Environments explains how the environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning. The commitments are focused around observation, assessment and planning. Support for every child, the learning environment, the wider context - transitions, continuity and multi-agency working.

  • I will plan and check on each child’s progress and involve parents and the local community as much as possible. I will ensure that inside and outside spaces of the setting are safe, interesting and engaging. I will support children when they move on, helping them to succeed.

Learning and Development recognises that children develop and learn in different ways and at different paces. All areas of learning and development are equally important and inter-connected.

  • I will focus on ensuring children learn through play and exploration, supporting each child. I will encourage children to develop their imagination and to get actively involved in learning to make decisions. I will help children’s creative and critical thinking skills, e.g. recognising problems and finding workable means for meeting those problems.
